PLATE Privacy Policy
Effective 4 October 2026.
The short version
We use your meal photos and profile to estimate nutrition and give you suggestions. That’s it. We never sell your personal information or use your meal photos for advertising. Helping improve our food recognition is optional, and off unless you turn it on. You can export or delete your data at any time in the app.
1. Who we are
PLATE (“PLATE”, “we”, “us”) is operated by Klyra Innovations Private Limited, C-32, Sobha Ivory, St Johns Road, Bangalore 560042, Karnataka, India. We decide how and why personal data is processed through the PLATE app and website (the “Data Fiduciary” under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and the “controller” under laws such as the GDPR). This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
2. Information we collect
You give us: account details (your name, email address and sign-in method, for example Sign in with Apple, Google or an email code); your date of birth, used to check that you are within PLATE’s age range; profile and goals (the equation profile you choose, height, weight, usual activity level and goal, such as weight loss, maintenance or muscle gain); your confirmation that you meet PLATE’s eligibility rules (we record the confirmation, not any medical condition); meal photos you take or upload, the foods and portions identified, nutrition estimates, your edits and the meals you log; and anything you send us when you contact support. Height, weight and goals are health-related information and we treat them with extra care: they are stored encrypted.
Collected automatically: device and session details needed to keep you signed in and secure (a device label such as “PLATE on iPhone”, app version, and when each session was used); your IP address, used for security, abuse prevention and rate limiting, and stored only in shortened or hashed form in our records; and technical diagnostic events, such as a sign-in or camera error, which contain no meal, health or profile data. We do not collect precise location. The PLATE app does not contain third-party analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs. To make sure each email address gets the free trial only once, we keep a one-way fingerprint of your email address (it cannot be turned back into the address) with the date your trial started.
From third parties: Apple, Google and Razorpay tell us whether your subscription is active, renewed or cancelled. We never receive your full card details. If you sign in with Apple or Google, they share your name (if you allow it) and email address with us.
3. How we use your information
To provide PLATE: estimate the nutrition of your meals, calculate your daily calorie, protein and fibre targets, suggest optional adjustments and keep your meal diary. To check eligibility (age) before calorie features are available. To manage your account and subscription, and to provide customer support. To keep PLATE safe and reliable: prevent fraud and abuse, fix bugs and monitor performance. To improve food recognition and suggestions, only if you opt in; you can turn this off at any time in the app. To send service messages (such as sign-in codes and security alerts) and, with your permission, reminders. To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
4. Meal photos
Photo analysis happens only after you allow it in the app. Before analysis, location and camera details are removed from the photo. The cleaned photo is sent to Anthropic, PBC (United States), which identifies the foods and estimates portions on our behalf under contract and may not use your photos for its own purposes. The photo is deleted after analysis unless you choose to keep it with the meal; kept photos are deleted when you delete the meal or your account. We do not use your photos for facial recognition, advertising or any purpose unrelated to PLATE. Try to keep people and personal documents out of the frame; photos showing people are rejected and deleted.
5. Why we may process your data
India: we process your personal data with your consent (given when you accept these terms and, separately, for photo analysis and model improvement) and for legitimate uses permitted by law, such as complying with legal obligations. You can withdraw consent at any time; this does not affect processing before the withdrawal, but some features may stop working.
EEA and UK users: contract (to provide the app and any subscription), explicit consent (for health-related information and for improving our models), legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention and improving the service, balanced against your rights) and legal obligation.
6. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We share it only with: service providers bound by contracts that limit how they use your data, namely cloud hosting and storage (Amazon Web Services, Mumbai region), AI image analysis (Anthropic, PBC (United States)), email delivery (Resend) and sign-in (Apple, Google); payment providers (Apple, Google and Razorpay) to process and verify subscriptions; authorities where required by law, or to protect the rights, property or safety of users, the public or PLATE; and a buyer or successor if PLATE is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case we will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
7. Cookies & advertising
Our website may use cookies and similar technologies, including Google Ads conversion tracking, to understand which ads lead to downloads. Where required, we ask for your consent first, and you can change your choice at any time. The PLATE app does not show third-party ads, and your meal, health and profile data are never used for ad targeting. You can manage Google ad personalisation at https://adssettings.google.com and in your device settings.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your personal information promptly and in any case within 30 days, except records we must keep by law, such as your acceptance of these terms, consent choices and security logs, which are kept without your name or email for up to 3 years, and transaction records. Database backups expire after 30 days. The one-way trial fingerprint and trial start date are kept after deletion, only to prevent the same email address from receiving another free trial. De-identified data used to improve the service cannot be linked back to you.
9. Your rights & choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to: access, correct or erase your personal information; receive a copy of your data in a portable format (in the app: Profile → Export my data); withdraw consent, or object to or restrict certain processing; nominate another person to exercise your rights if you die or become unable to; have your grievances addressed; opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information (we do neither) and limit the use of sensitive information (California residents); and complain to a data protection authority.
You can delete your account at any time in the app (Profile → Delete account) or by emailing us. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription; please cancel it in your Apple settings. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights, and we may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
10. Security
We encrypt data in transit and at rest, and encrypt sensitive profile fields separately. PLATE has no passwords: you sign in with a one-time email code, Apple or Google, and signed-in sessions are stored in your device’s secure storage. We limit access to what our team needs and regularly review our safeguards. No system is completely secure, so please keep your device and email account protected.
11. Children
PLATE is only for adults aged 19 to 64. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone younger. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
12. International transfers
Your account data is stored in India (Amazon Web Services, Mumbai region). Some service providers, such as our AI image analysis and email providers, process data in other countries, including the United States, under contracts that protect it. Where we transfer personal information out of the EEA, UK or Switzerland, we use approved safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. The effective date above shows when it last changed.
14. Contact us and grievances
